Thermalling & Cross-Country Courses (2 weeks)
- Tour 2001 – from 10 to 25 Jan 2020
- Tour 2002 – from 31 Jan to 15 Feb 2020
- Tour 2003 – from 28 Feb to 14 Mar 2020
These two-week courses are suitable for those pilots with limited cross-country flying experience and also the more advanced pilots wanting to improve.
The course will be based in Governador Valadares and we will usually visit three different sites, such as Castelo, Baixo Guandu or Alfredo Chaves. These are all excellent cross-country flying sites that we have used many times before with great success.
Governador Valadares requires little introduction – quite simply it’s one of the world’s premier paragliding destinations. Valadares has hosted many top-level competitions including the 2005 World Championships and the PWC Super Finals in both January 2014 and January 2017.
The thermals are smooth, reliable and user-friendly all the way to a warm cloudbase, over a rolling landscape of green hills that extends as far as the eye can see and the pilot can fly. It’s a great place to fine-tune thermalling skills and speed-to-fly technique. Valadares is one of the favourite sites around the world for teaching cross-country. The gentle winds, lack of turbulence and minimum stress allow the pilot to focus on the flying and just have fun.
Alfredo Chaves, situated close to Vitoria and only 45 minutes from the beach, is an excellent site for blowing away the cobwebs and getting you used to the conditions in Brazil.
Castelo is another world-class site that has hosted the PWC several times and numerous other competitions. The scenery is amazing and the flying is excellent. Castelo is one of my favourite locations in Brazil.
Baixo Guandu is yet another incredible site. It was originally selected to host the PWC Super Final in 2014 and hosted the PWC Super Final in March 2019.
Let us take the stress out of your holiday by providing everything you need and enabling you to focus on just having fun!
The course will be run by Dean Crosby, CFI of Active Edge Paragliding, which after 28 years is one of the longest-running and most successful paragliding schools in the UK today. Dean will be guiding pilots in the air, with in-flight coaching by radio, while I provide assistance on the take-off and logistical support.
Dean is a BHPA Senior Instructor with a vast amount of experience – flying for 36 years and teaching both paragliding and hang gliding for over 32 years. He has been British Paragliding Champion and British Cross-Country Champion twice. He was captain of both the British Paragliding Team and the British Hang Gliding Team. Dean also competed at national level in all three soaring disciplines – paragliding, hang gliding and gliding. He has also held site records in both Valadares and Baixo Guandu.
I have been flying paragliders for the past 19 years and have clocked up more kilometres than I care to remember. I first came to Brazil in 2004 and was immediately hooked – what an amazing place! The people, the climate and the consistently reliable conditions make it second-to-none. I moved here permanently in 2006 and have been running guided tours for paraglider pilots from all over the world for the past 11 years.
Places on this course will be strictly limited to 7 pilots so please book early to avoid disappointment.

What you can expect:
You should arrive in Vitoria on the Friday before the course starts. You will stay in Vitoria overnight so that you are properly rested before the course starts.
Exactly which sites we visit will be determined by the forecast nearer the time. We want to offer you some variety but will always try to choose the location that maximises the flying potential.
Each day you will be collected from the hotel and transported up to the take-off. Theory lectures will be done on an ad hoc basis, fitting them in wherever possible for those that want them. There will be a de-briefing after each day’s flying.
The take-off areas are all big, clean and well-maintained. Winds are usually very light on take-off and most pilots should have no problem at all with launching.
I will be on take-off to offer assistance and advice where necessary. Dean will usually take off first in order to check out the conditions and identify areas of suitable lift. I will assist the rest of the group to get airborne as soon as possible after that and Dean will be coaching by radio from the air. If you are unlucky enough to have a short flight and conditions allow you will be given the opportunity for a second flight.
All pilots will be flying with SPOT GPS tracking devices. These are equipped for live-tracking and transmit coordinates by satellite every 10 minutes. They are a terrific advantage both in terms of safety and assisting the retrieve operation once you have landed. Radio will be the primary means of communication and all pilots must be in possession of suitable equipment.
